My Fucking Feelings (And a Practice For You)

Feelings are not just about feelings. They are about ownership. If you don’t own your feelings / state, you will never know who you are. If you don’t know who you are, you will never know who you want to be. It’s only when you listen to what you feel that you can began to accept your story.

Your story is the collection of events and milestones that has shaped you. It’s the most valuable thing you own. Most people deny their story. They want to rip out chapters. But if that’s how you spend your energy, you will never write a new one.

You must start with your truth and eventually stand on it. And your truth is found in how you feel, about something, someone, your life, and yourself.

Giving yourself space to feel and allowing that to manifest into action is the process that will change your mindset. Experiencing something new, something real, something healthy, will give you fuel to continue down that path. Your behavior can change your thoughts just as your thoughts can change your behavior. It doesn’t matter which hallway you enter. But to get there, the door you must enter is your truth / feelings. Instead of seeking something that is outside of self, like validation and approval, you are channeling power from within.

“My Fucking Feelings” opened my path, gave me a voice, changed my state, which eventually changed my life.

Take a minute and play back your story. The good, the bad, the ugly. Everything. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and see the unfolding of your life. What do you see? Don’t cherry pick moments. Allow whatever to come up. Trust that what comes up is coming up for a reason. Whether it’s good or bad, it’s meaningful to you. This means it’s a part of you. Let your mind wonder as you replay all the events that have lead to where you are now. For now, do it in broad strokes. Later, we will do another exercise called “Your life as a movie trailer” where we will go deeper with this.

Now what feelings are associated with what you’re imagining? Don’t think. Just see and allow yourself to feel. Chances are, there is pain. There is joy. There is regret. There is shame. There is a collage of feelings that come up when you play your life back. Notice them. Don’t judge them.

Another deep breath.

Now think about where you’re at right now in your life and what you’re going through. Feel your fears, worries, concerns, and struggles. What are you excited about, looking forward to, proud of? How have you changed and how do you feel about that?

Take out a piece of paper. Or if you’re like me, open up your word processor of choice. Write across the top: “My Fucking Feelings”.

Now write down everything you are feeling.
