We spin because of the records we constantly play in our heads. I have a box set on repeat. Some titles include, “Worried about tomorrow”, “What if”, “Always look back”. They’re horrible songs that instantly pull me out of the pure truth of my life — the here and now, and slingshots me into a hazy maze filled with anxiety, doubt, guilt, and shame. There is no oxygen here. We become shells.
We need to break our records if we actually want to live. Records are recorded. If you don’t eliminate your tracks, you will never be able to lay new ones. So many of us grip what was or what may be so tightly, we don’t allow any room for what is. Me included. And what is is where everything lives, including closure and potential. If you have the ability to live fully in the present, soaking in what’s right in front of you and nothing else, the past starts to shrink and the future expands. Really fast.
It doesn’t mean to ignore and forget. It means to accept and forgive. It doesn’t mean to have no plans or goals. It means to let go of worry, judgment, and dread.
Many live in the past because of their past. Their wiring keeps them stuck and spinning. Many obsess about the future because they’ve been positioned to since they were kids. Like me. So to shed everything but truth isn’t just a choice. It’s work. The key word is ability and the ability to live in the here and now takes rewiring, starting with a hard decision to want more.
So how do you do it? How do you come back? There are many techniques. You can Google them. But it all comes down to
A lot of practice.
And knowing what’s at stake if you don’t.
Maybe it’s not that things aren’t happening or that you’re not happy. Maybe you just haven’t practiced tapping into it. Maybe it’s all right in front of you. You just don’t see it because you spend most of your days listening to old tracks.
Hang the DJ.
